Learn to recognize hazmat or WMD incidents, assess risks from a safe distance, and use the Emergency Response Guidebook to guide early actions. Students learn to identify hazards through placards, labels, and container types; understand material behaviour and exposure routes; establish safety zones; make notifications; and initiate basic protective measures.

This training builds upon NFPA 470 HazMat Awareness and focuses on defensive actions at hazardous materials incidents. Responders learn to recognize and assess the scene, apply safety measures, including appropriate PPE and scene control, establish decontamination, and use basic containment tactics. The program emphasizes operating within ICS, protecting people and the environment, managing exposure risks, and carrying out assigned operational roles effectively
